DAVID KOHN, David Kohn Architects; CLARE CAROLIN, Deputy Head of Programme, Curating Contemporary Art, The Royal College of Art and MARIANNE MUELLER, Casper Mueller Kneer Architects engage in a table-top discussion about the spaces for the display and selling of art: from art fairs and commercial gallery spaces – stereotypically where high-culture meets commerce – to public galleries, referencing current and recent projects and examples. In considering how these spaces are designed and curated, this seminar questions what the differences are, perceptually or physically, between the commercial space of art and that of the museum.

This research seminar, curated by Blockmagazine, is part of a series focusing on questions of art and space, at the Faculty of Arts, Design and Media at the University of Sunderland. Chaired by Rob Wilson, Editor, Block. Organised by space/socialspace at the University of Sunderland.

5pm, Wednesday 7th March
Fine Art–Faculty of Arts, Design and Media, University of Sunderland, Ashburne House, Ryhope Road, Sunderland SR2 7EF

Saturday, 10. December 2011, 5:00pm

This conference Wrocław Contemporary Museum will be discussing the difficulties and challenges that cultural institutions using ‘concrete’ post-war buildings are faced with. Exciting the imagination, quite often delighting with their architecture (sometimes even competing with the works exhibited inside), they bring whole network of meanings and sense into the story of contemporary art.
Semantics of those places can be equally their asset and an undesired heritage, making curatorial work more difficult. On that day we also wish to talk about the best ways to use the exhibition-wise difficult space of Wrocław museum. Hard to arrange, the rooms of Strzegomski shelter require more attention, time, debate.
To participate in our conference we have invited individuals experienced in ‘working’ with bunkers (Hans-Jürgen Schwalm, Hans Günter Golinski), those who know how to plasticize disobedient objects (Jens Casper, Łukasz Wojciechowski) and who see them as a work of art (Iwona Bigos). Please familiarize yourself with the program and feel welcome to visit the Museum on Saturday, 10th December.
